CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - A deputy with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office was arrested in Mecklenburg County over the weekend.

The deputy -- 40-year-old Michael Ray Hargrave -- was arrested on Sunday, May 3, and was charged with communicating threats and cyberstalking.

An arrest warrant alleged that Hargrave sent a message to the victim, which in part said “I’m mean and vindictive person,” “I’m going on the attack,” and “I’m going full violent ruin your life.”

The warrant did not confirm how Hargrave and the victim knew each other, but the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office said a criminal domestic violence protection order was put in place.

“Any time a member of law enforcement is arrested, it is difficult for everyone involved,” the Mecklenburg County sheriff said in a news release.

“All law enforcement personnel are sworn to uphold the law fairly and professionally, regardless of a person’s title, position or agency,” the sheriff continued. “This incident is a reminder that accountability applies to all of us who wear the badge. We will continue to handle this matter with the same integrity, transparency and respect that our community expects.”

Following his arrest, Hargrave was taken to the Mecklenburg County jail.

Initial court records said that he should have no further contact with the victim.
