CONCORD, NC (WBTV)- A former two-term Concord mayor passed away Friday.

89-year-old Dr. George Liles, a Central High School graduate, was an institution in Cabarrus County, where he started Cabarrus Surgical Clinic after serving in World War II.

After retiring in 1993, Lile co-founded Community Free Clinic to provide free medical care for the uninsured.

Also in 1993, Lile ran for and won the title of Mayor of Concord. Lile served two terms as the city's first Republican mayor since Reconstruction. During his tenure, Lile helped secure funding for the Concord Regional Airport and laid the groundwork for a future convention center.

A celebration of his life is planned for 11:00 a.m. on Monday at All Saints Episcopal Church in Concord.
