NEWTON, N.C. (WBTV) - Firefighters battled a building fire in Catawba County for several hours early Friday morning.

The Hickory Fire Department said it was called to help the Newton Fire Department with the blaze off North College Avenue around 3 a.m. on April 24.

A picture shared by Hickory firefighters showed what looked like a white, two-story building with burn marks and smoke coming up from it. The department also shared a video where tall flames and smoke were visible before firefighters even arrived.

A person who lives nearby wrote on social media that “it [sounded] like literal bombs going off” where the fire was burning.

Hickory firefighters said they were at the building for more than three hours before they left around 6:45 a.m. Friday. The building appeared to be right off North College Avenue between East 17th and East 18th streets.

There was no word on how the fire started nor if anyone was hurt.

Newton officials were contacted for more information but no additional details had been given as of this writing.
