CABARRUS COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

Federal documents outline a jailhouse plan to assassinate a man left paralyzed in a rest-area shooting late last month as investigators track down and charge a second man in the case.

Gregory McKee, a father of four, was shot in the back on November 28, leaving him paralyzed from the thighs down. The shooting happened in the southbound rest area off Interstate-85.

According to the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office, 29-year-old Terrell David Thomas, of Charlotte, was charged with Attempted Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, and Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury.

McKee and his family were traveling from Virginia back to Gaston County when they stopped at the rest area. McKee was approached in the restroom by Thomas and Darren Manuel. According to a federal affidavit, the pair pointed a gun at his head.

Investigators say as McKee attempted to run from the restroom, he was shot in the back. Thomas and Manuel ran from the scene.

Thomas was arrested Thursday night in an apartment in Queens, New York by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He is currently being held without bond and will have an extradition hearing.

According to the affidavit, a search was conducted by Manuel’s parole officer and he admitted to his role in the crime, saying “that’s me in the video,” referring to the surveillance video from the rest area sent out prior to his arrest to help identify the suspects. Clothes in his bedroom matched clothes he was seen wearing in the video.

He was arrested in early December, in Charlotte, and is being held on a $2 million. His next court date is scheduled for December 17.

Last Thursday, investigators say they learned Manuel was “conspiring with associates to murder” McKee.

The affidavit says Manuel contacted his girlfriend, Keyona Desiree Powell while in jail and told her to contact Thomas and tell him that McKee “had to go and he didn’t care when or how it happened, but he had ‘to go’.”

Investigators used location and ping data from Thomas’ cell phone to find he was in New Jersey and had placed 16 phone calls to his parents, who also live in New Jersey.

According to a federal affidavit, an arrest warrant was issued for Thomas on December 3.

Terrie McKee spoke with WBTV this afternoon. A reporter told her the information about Thomas’s arrest and that federal investigators believe Manuel wanted to kill her husband. She said she had no comment due to this being an active and open investigation.
