Catawba County Humane Society puts executive director on leave; investigating complaints
Investigation follows public allegations of animal abuse, toxic workplace culture
HICKORY, N.C. (WBTV) - The Board of Directors for the Catawba County Humane Society placed their executive director on administrative leave and authorized a third-party investigation into complaints, according to a statement on Wednesday.
The investigation comes on the heels of two high-level departures at the agency. The former head of marketing and the former special events manager recently resigned, alleging a toxic workplace culture in public posts on social media.
A public petition that has garnered more than 1,200 signatures includes additional allegations of animal abuse. WBTV has not yet been able to substantiate those allegations, and recent state inspection reports have found the organization in compliance.
“The Board of Directors is aware of recent complaints regarding our organization and take these concerns seriously,” a statement from the organization read.
“We are actively reviewing the issues raised and are committed to addressing them with transparency and diligence.”
Sources told WBTV that the statement comes after an emergency meeting of the board on Tuesday night.
WBTV is investigating the allegations; contact naomi.kowles@wbtv.com if you have documentation or tips you wish to share.
