'Life's short': He left his full-time job to make banjos

MIDLAND, NC (WBTV) - Some people might never gather the nerve to do what Ryan Navey did.

In February, he left his furniture-making job of 20 years to make banjos in a small shop on the side of his Midland home.

"You have to be confident in yourself in what you're offering to the world if you're going to sell it," Navey said, "Because if you don't believe in it, nobody else will."

Navey started the Carolina Banjo Company. He spends up to a month handcrafting each instrument.

And they're beautiful.

So far his leap of faith has paid off. If you want a banjo made by Navey, you'll have to wait about a year. His backlog is long but his banjos are now all over the world.

Not a bad payoff for following his dreams.

"Life's short. You don't have a certain amount of time here, you have to make the most of it," Navey said.
