GASTON COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Four people were arrested and two homes were raided during a drug bust in Gaston County Tuesday morning.

James Michael Hardin, Xavier Twanne Hardin, Anthony Jarbar Pettus and Tammy Denise Smith are accused of trafficking crack cocaine since 2011.

Police could be seen raiding two homes Tuesday on Shannon Bradley Road.

In 2013 through 2017, law enforcement debriefed with several sources who say Pettus used a home in Gastonia to store and sell cocaine. The first undercover buy was made in 2011.

Neighbors told WBTV they have long suspected illegal activity was being done at the homes that were raided Tuesday morning.

"There's a lot of activity going on in this area so it's not really a shock," said Melissa Phinney, who lives in the neighborhood.

Ervin Friday Jr has lived in the neighborhood for more than 40 years. He said the area has become progressively more crime-ridden, and it's not unusual to see police cars come by.

He told WBTV a raid like this was a long time coming.

"It's a good sign that they're cleaning up some of this mess," Friday Jr said. "Evidently somebody else is tired of it, and turned them in."

Anthony Pettus, Randall Petus, James Hardin, Xavier Hardin and Tammy Smith "are responsible for trafficking in well excess of 5 kilograms of cocaine and well in excess of 280 grams of crack cocaine since as early as 2011," court documents state.

In September 2014, officers obtained a search warrant at Anthony Pettus' grandmother's house after smelling marijuana during a "knock and talk." Officers say they obtained 10 grams of marijuana from the home. In Anthony Pettus' Ford, officers say they found five .38 caliber ammunition rounds and $5,025 cash.

Court document state that on the following dates, an undercover person purchased cocaine from Anthony Pettus, and several occasions involved Hardin, Smith and Hankerson:

  • May 9, 2011
  • March 26, 2015
  • March 30, 2015
  • April 23, 2015
  • April 30, 2015
  • May 7, 2015
  • June 18, 2015
  • September 15, 2015
  • September 26, 2015
  • April 20, 2015
  • January 18, 2017
  • March 29, 2017
  • April 3, 2017
  • April 11, 2017

On June 14, officers executed a search warrant at Antoine Williams' home on Shannon Bradley Road, where they reported finding cocaine, scales, suspected marijuana, a knife and $2,890 in cash.

Officers were called to a drug complaint at Smith's home on Shannon Bradley Road on Nov. 17, 2016, where they reported finding scales, cocaine, marijuana, and a glass pipe.

Friday, Jr., said he is glad this raid happened, and these suspects are off the streets. He also told WBTV he hopes this sends a message to other drug dealers who may live in the neighborhood.

"These drug people out there, they need to wise up because the police know what you're doing. Sooner or later, they're going to get you. Just like right now, they're getting them," Friday Jr said.

Arrest warrants are being obtained for James Hardin, Xavier Hardin, Anthony Pettus and Smith in the bust.
