Man ID'd, shot and killed by Pizza Hut employee in west Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The man shot and killed by a Pizza Hut employee during a robbery in west Charlotte has been identified by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

The shooting happened Sunday in the 3200 block of Freedom Drive around 1:30 a.m

According to CMPD, Pizza Hut was closed when three people walked in to rob the business. One of the employees reportedly fired his own handgun, fatally striking 28-year-old Michael Renard Grace. Grace was pronounced dead on scene by MEDIC.

Police said Grace was carrying a gun when he was shot.

The two other suspects ran away and have not been arrested, according to police.

Sunday evening, Pizza Hut released the following statement about the incident:

"The local Pizza Hut franchisee is fully cooperating with the Charlotte Police Department as they continue their investigation, but want to stress that the security of its staff is of upmost concern. They are providing support to the team members involved to ensure their health and well-being following this incident. The employee involved in the shooting has been placed on a leave of absence following further review."

Officers said the investigation is ongoing.
