GASTON COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said they are investigating a case involving an officer with the Lowell Police Department in Gaston County and a minor.
NCSBI officials have not released many details, but did confirm they were "requested to investigate the allegation of inappropriate relationship between a minor and a Lowell police officer."
Gaston County Police Chief said they became aware of an allegation, and in talking with the Gaston County DA – requested an outside agency... the SBI... take over the investigation.
That was about a couple weeks ago.
It is not clear when the alleged relationship occurred, or how the allegations came to light.
City officials said the officer in question is out on leave because of a back injury.
The city manager said he learned about the investigation 48 hours ago, and that the Lowell Police Department is cooperating with the SBI.
The names and ages of the officer and minor reportedly involved have not been released.
