CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - One century plus eleven years of life calls for a celebration unlike any other. On Saturday, Hester Ford celebrated being the third oldest living person in North Carolina, with hundreds of her descendants.
Ford was born in 1905 in Lancaster, SC. Through her life she gave birth to 12 children. She's now the matriarch of a family that includes 53 grandchildren, 120 great-grandchildren, and 126 great-great-grandchildren.
"I worked on the farm. I did some of everything on the farm that a person could do," Ford said Wednesday afternoon.
Her backbone was made strong through her hard work. Ford lives in her west Charlotte home with two of her daughters. Her youngest daughter Hattie Thomas says their family is incredibly grateful to still have its matriarch.
"A lot of people have gone to rest in their younger years, so it's a blessing that she's been with us all these years," Thomas said.
Time has taken its toll on Mrs. Ford, but one thing remains intact and untouched by 111 years of life; her faith.
While we visited, Ford was able to recite Psalm 23 word for word and ended with a smile. Her family says her strong faith has followed her throughout her life, and they give credit to God for seeing her through so many years.
