YORK, SC (WBTV) - A man accused of forcing three children to perform sexual acts on each other will remain in jail after a York judge denied his bond Wednesday.
Dontavious Lawrence Byers, 23, was found hiding in a closet and arrested in York earlier this week, according to officers.
York police said Byers reportedly forced three children to perform sexual acts on each other and gave them marijuana to smoke. The children are reportedly between the ages of 6 and 9 years old.
Police said the children belonged to Byers' girlfriend.
According to detectives, the children were interviewed and warrants were executed for Byers' arrest. He has been charged with three counts of engaging a child for sexual performance, three counts of criminal solicitation of a minor, and one count of disseminating obscene material to a minor.
In court, Byers qualified for a public defender, though considered representing himself at first.
While he did not speak specifically to the allegations, he did request a polygraph test.
"I can't get no polygraph though? Like, either way? I can't request for no polygraph or nothing so I don't have to sit and wait on me versus some kids that is like actually bad?" Byers asked.
A judge told Byers she could not order a polygraph and said that was up to investigators.
Byers has a Gastonia address. WBTV went by the home and spoke to a woman who identified herself as Byers' mother.
She shook her head in disbelief while looking at Byers' mugshot and the list of charges against him. The woman did not want to talk on camera.
Neighbors who know Byers' family said they did not know him well, but were shocked to hear about the allegations.
"I know his mother, she's precious. She's a very sweet lady and I know she raised her kids right so I find that hard to believe," said Pam Hardee, who lives across from Byers' family.
In a warrant for Byers' arrest, the three children make various allegations against Byers.
One child told police that Byers had exposed himself, showed them pornography, and made one child videotape the other two engaged in inappropriate touching.
Police would not say if they had any video evidence that led to the charges.
In the arrest warrant, one child states that they made allegations to their mother, but claimed she did nothing.
Detectives could not say if anyone else faced charges in the case, but said it was an ongoing investigation.
According to police, the children are now in the custody of other family members.
