CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A driver was charged after his passenger was killed in a motorcycle accident early Wednesday morning, shutting down outbound Independence Boulevard for a time.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say they were called to the 1200 block of Independence Boulevard near Charlottetowne Avenue, where they found a woman, later identified as 34-year-old Traci Gagnon, dead in the roadway.

The crash happened just before 2:30 a.m.

Police say William Anthony Short, 44, was driving a Cam Am Spyder Motorcycle at a high speed with passenger, Gagnon, when he hit the back of another motorcycle and lost control. Short and Gagnon flew off and the motorcycle continued traveling into a concrete barrier.

Alcohol and speed contributed the the deadly crash, CMPD says.

Gagnon was pronounced dead on the scene, police say. Short went to Carolinas Medical Center with minor injuries.

Short was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired and no motorcycle endorsement.

Officers diverted through traffic into the bus lanes on Independence Boulevard.

The driver of the second motorcycle did not remain on scene.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
