Fight between HS staff member, student caught on video

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - By the time Harding University High School dismissed on Wednesday, students were evidently buzzing about a fight between a staff member and a student. By late afternoon, cell phone video of the fight was posted to social media.

"I feel bad. I feel kinda horrible," said senior Nysean Barker. "This is my school. I've been here four years - just to hear something like that is getting out so quickly."

It's unclear what started the fight. Students say it happened not long before dismissal.

A spokesperson for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools told  WBTV the incident is under investigation, and any students involved will be disciplined according to the student code of conduct.

Sources say in addition to the cell phone video, there is also surveillance footage from inside the school that will be used in the investigation to determine how the fight started.

Students said a female student became upset when a staff member allegedly put her hands on her.

Barker said he heard the student was "assaulted, pushed and they retaliated with a group of friends."

Seniors at Harding High are preparing for commencement, but the video is now front and center.

"That's all they're talking about while we were practicing for graduation," said Michael Duker. "It would be surprising to anyone to hear an administrator attacked. That's why it was kind of a shock when we heard."

"It's just crazy, because you wouldn't think it would happen toward the end of the school year," Barker said. "Even though we're not graduated yet - school is not over yet - you still have to abide by the rules."

"Stuff like this, it shouldn't be this. Cameras everywhere," said another senior. "It shouldn't be this big."

That student's father agreed.

"It's getting this attention, and it shouldn't," said Eddie Byrdsong. "These kids, the students that's graduating - they're entering a new stage in their lives. That's huge. That's what we ought to be talking about."

Charlotte police said they could not yet release any information about the incident.
