Pilot killed in Chesterfield County plane crash ID'd

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, SC (WBTV) - Officials have identified a pilot killed when his plane crashed in Chesterfield County Thursday as a man from Atlanta, Georgia.

Walker Jeter Hester, 59, was killed. The Federal Aviation Administration says the plane crashed on an island in the Pee Dee River in Cheraw.

Deputies say the area, near Highway 52 on Legion Street, is hard to get to.

The FAA describes the plane as a "Rocket II, experimental, amateur-built aircraft."

According to investigators, no other people were on the plane.

The FAA is investigating the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to determine probable cause.
