CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Another fight at West Mecklenburg High School Thursday concerns parents, students, and a school board member. A video WBTV obtained shows a fight between several girls. Sources said it took place during lunch time, and it is very violent.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg School (CMS) District sent a statement when asked about the altercation.
"We can confirm an incident at West Meck that the principal is looking into," the statement read. "As we said yesterday, any student involved in an incident will be disciplined according to the student code of conduct."
WBTV was told more than 6 arrests could come as a result of the fight.
Thelma Byers-Bailey is a CMS school board member. West Meck is in her district. She said she often gets calls about fights at the school. She wonders if the school and the district are doing all they can to address the reasons fights occur, and questions if the school is offering social and emotional support needed.
Parents are concerned about constant disruptions.
"I just want to know that [when] my child comes to school, that they're safe and they are getting a quality education," parent Nicholas Closey said.
Closey believes constant fighting can get in the way of learning.
"I believe she is getting a quality education here," the parent said. "Yet I believe that all of the external things, like fights, that are going on inside the school can cause a problem for someone who is trying to get a quality education."
Closey's daughter, Heaven Crochrell, told WBTV fights happen often at her school. She says multiple fights happened on Thursday. She believes more security is needed to help keep the peace.
"It's a lot of violence going on around the world," Crochrell said. "People getting killed... you don't know if it's your last day to live, so it needs to be changed or somebody can really get hurt."
Another issue the high school is dealing with is students seen skipping school.
"Same thing I see every morning," neighbor Rolander Grice said. "About seven or eight guys and girls, just walking down the street by the house right there. The officers, they try to be on top of them, but it's like they got the officer's schedule cause as soon as he leaves they show up."
CMS officials said it's going to take parental involvement to make things better at West Mecklenburg High School.
