GASTON COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - A woman was killed and her mother injured in an accident on Highway 321 just south of Hardin Road in Gaston County Wednesday afternoon.

Troopers with the North Carolina Highway Patrol said that 49-year-old Jill Ann Hamrick was driving a Nissan northbound with her mother when her vehicle has some type of mechanical problem. A pickup truck traveling at a higher speed crashed into the rear of the Nissan.

Officials say the driver of the pickup was looking off to the side of the road at crews cutting down trees when the accident happened. He said that when he looked back up, it was already too late to avoid the collision.

Hamrick was pronounced dead at the scene. Her mother was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Troopers said Wednesday that the driver of the pickup was charged with failure to reduce speed, but said Thursday that no charges were filed. Officials said that other charges could be pending.
