CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A fight involving a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) school resource officer and six students at Harding High School Thursday morning is under investigation, CMPD says.

Officer J. Flowers responded to a fight involving six students in the school's hallway around 11 a.m. Flowers attempted to break up the fight when a 15-year-old student involved in the fight tackled the officer and knocked him to the ground, CMPD says.

Flowers got up and was able to restrain the student and place him in handcuffs. CMPD says Flowers used physical force in an attempt gain compliance.

The 15-year-old was arrested and charged with assault on a police officer, simple assault and resisting arrest. The teen is also facing weapons charges after police say a pair of brass knuckles was found on him.

The suspect was taken to a juvenile detention facility. His name is being withheld due to his age.

"The CMPD Internal Affairs Division is conducting an investigation to ensure that Officer Flowers followed department procedures and directives," CMPD said.
