Man charged with murder, victim ID'd in Hickory shooting

HICKORY, NC (WBTV) - A man is charged with murder in a shooting that left a man dead in Hickory Thursday afternoon,Hickory police say.

Lakeith Marshaun Lawrence, 20, is charged in the shooting death of 45-year-old Philip Eugene McLean.

Around 1:12 p.m. officers responded to a report of shots being fired in the 600 block of 17th Street Drive NW, where they found a man, later identified as McLean, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead on scene.

Lawrence was arrested just after 7:30 p.m. Thursday and charged with murder.

Nick Payne says he was taking a nap Thursday afternoon at his apartment on 17th Street Drive when he was awoken by a noise.

"It was just a loud bang!" Payne said.

Others heard the same thing and saw a man running away from the backside of the building. It was several minutes later that they discovered McLean had been shot and they called for help.

Police arrived quickly, including Hickory Police Chief Tom Adkins who helped another officer administer CPR to the victim until medical units could get there.

"We tried our best," said the chief.

Investigators say some people in the apartment building heard arguing before the shot rang out, but they did not know what the argument was about.

Police don't believe McLean lived in the apartment building.

Anyone with additional information about the case is asked to call the Criminal Investigations Division at 828-328-5551.
