GASTON COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - A former teacher at a Gaston County school arrested Monday for reportedly having an inappropriate relationship with a student made her first appearance in court Tuesday.

Teika Watkins Helton is charged with one count of sexual activity between school personnel and a student.

Police say the investigation began on October 15, when the police department received allegations of inappropriate conduct by a female teacher with a male student at South Point High School. The allegations, the report states, include a sexual relationship prior to graduation in the spring of 2015.

Investigators say the offense occurred in the third week of May 2015 and prior to the victim's graduation while the student was a senior.

Officials with the school district said Helton, who was at South Point since August 1992, resigned in October. They did not give a reason for the resignation.

Helton appeared in court Tuesday with her attorney and one other person. She declined to provide a comment to the media.

Several people at South Point High School spoke about the legal matter Tuesday.

"Of course I've heard about the situation. It's crazy," said Austin Harvell, a senior at the school.

Parents outside of the school expressed concern over the matter.

"Of course situations like that always make you a little bit uneasy, but it seems to be the world we live in today," said parent Angy Calvert.

Anyone with additional information about the case is asked to call the Gaston County Police Department at 704-866-3320.
