CHAPEL HILL, NC (WBTV) - A "Gathering of Friends" is being held Thursday afternoon for an Elon University student-athlete who died this week.
Friends, teammates and classmates will gather at Rhodes Stadium to remember Demitri Allison, a junior wide receiver for the Elon Phoenix football team.
Allison is from Cornelius, North Carolina.
UNC Police confirmed that Allison Committed suicide. He died Wednesday after falling from a 10-story residence hall at UNC-Chapel Hill, officials said.
"I think everyone just needs to take a moment for thinking, reflection, for healing. Obviously, it is a very emotional time," said Tyler Patchen, a student at Elon University.
A university spokesman said Allison was studying management at Elon University.
"Everyone associated with Elon athletics is devastated," said Athletics Director Dave Blank. "Demitri was a talented young man with a bright future who was loved by his teammates. We mourn his loss deeply and we pray for his family and loved ones."
University officials said, "The death of any student is devastating to our community, especially in situations like this, and we want to reach out to friends and acquaintances who knew Demitri. The loss of a classmate, friend and student reminds us that the life of each person in our community is precious. This loss is particularly painful for the Phoenix athletics family, and the football team's Chaplain is providing counseling for the players and staff."
Students have also offered their support to the Allison family.
"I just want them to know that the whole Elon Community is here for them and anything they need anyone here would be willing to help them with," said Anna Cosentino.
The football team is still planning on playing their game against Maine this Saturday. The team is away this weekend.
