Mother charged in young boy's death, day after stepdad charged
GASTON COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - A Gaston County woman is facing charges after police say she tried to hide the truth about what happened in the death of her four-year-old son.
Malachi Deandre Golden was found dead inside a home in mid-May while he was being cared for by his stepdather, Thomas Allen Cheeks.
Monday, 28-year-old Cheeks was charged with murder in the little boy's death.
Investigators say they looked at toxicological analysis, historical analysis of medical records, and consulted with the North Carolina Medical Examiner's Office.
Tuesday afternoon officials announced Golden's mother, 24-year-old Tiffany Cheeks, was charged in his death as well.
Cheeks was charged with one count of Felony Accessory After the Fact to 1st Degree Murder after investigators say she lied about Malachi's death and told those lies to authorities in an effort to hide the true cause of death.
She was also charged with one count of Felony Child Abuse/Neglect Resulting In Serious Bodily Injury by not providing adequate care, medical treatment, and nutrition, resulting in serious bodily injury, malnutrition, dehydration and other medical complications.
She is currently in the Gaston County Jail with a one million dollar bond.
Investigation is ongoing and no further details can be released at this time though anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Gaston County Police Department at 704-866-3320 or Crime Stoppers at 704-861-8000.
