Mystery solved? Story behind cloaked figure is not so creepy
GASTONIA, NC (WBTV) - It looks like the mystery may be solved about a photo circulating around the Internet that created a buzz online.
A photo of a cloaked figure standing near a wooded area was rumored to have been taken in the Hudson Woods apartment complex in Gastonia.
The photos went viral after they were posted online and with it - the rumors.
The story went that the person donned a "floor-length, hooded attire" and the "figure had been dropping meat near a local playground."
Police spokesperson Donna Lahser told WBTV that investigators were called out to meet with the manager of the complex last Monday about the photo.
In an interview Tuesday, Lahser said there is no official investigation into the incident.
"It could've come from anywhere. It's just getting a lot of attention - maybe more credence than it deserves," said Lahser.
According to Lance Calhoun of Southwood Realty, the figure is real but the rumors are not.
The apartment director told WBTV on Tuesday that the photos are real and were taken at the apartment complex, but the figure was just a student acting like a television character for a school project.
Calhoun told the Gaston Gazette that the girl's mother saw the "overwhelming response" and called the leasing agent.
The student, and mother's name, have not been released.
Before the figure was unmasked, the community was abuzz about the picture.
"Who goes around in 90 degree weather with a black hood on?" questioned James Marsello, a resident of the complex.
Marsello said he had recently seen the photo and thought it was possible the picture was taken in his complex.
Mark Ledbetter said his children live in the Hudson Woods complex. He was visiting Tuesday when WBTV interviewed him about the picture.
"My thought was what is wrong with these people," Ledbetter said about the photo.
