Man in ax-wielding clown case turns himself in

HICKORY - NC (Adam Bell/The Charlotte Observer) - A Connelly Springs man surrendered to Hickory police Wednesday to face charges after a woman said someone in a clown mask and mutlicolored wig swung an ax at her last week.

Jimmy Daniel Raybon, 28, also known as Robert Gross, turned himself in without incident at 2:15 p.m., the arrest report said. He was arrested on outstanding warrants of assault with a deadly weapon and breaking and entering.

At 4:32 a.m. last Friday, police were called to a home in the 1300 block of 20th Avenue N.E. regarding an assault. Police said a 31-year-old woman was confronted by a man in a clown mask and wig wielding an ax.

The woman escaped unharmed, and was able to partially lift the mask. She recognized the man as an acquaintance, police said.

A roommate of the woman told local media that the victim had received several threatening texts before the attack.

The victim went to a magistrate and obtained warrants against him. He was jailed under a $6,000 bond, records show.

Raybon has been in and out of prison several times over the past decade, state records show, and has served time for false imprisonment/assault on a female, common law robbery, larceny and attempting to speed to elude arrest. He has a trial pending in Catawba County on a simple assault charge.
