WILKES COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - A man is dead and a Wilkes County sergeant is in the hospital after a gunfire exchange involving officers Monday morning, officials say.

According to the SBI, 60-year-old James Monroe Barrett died after shooting Sgt. Steven Russell, who was responding to a domestic dispute that Barrett was involved in.

Sgt. Russell was responding to the shooting call on North Ridge Road around 6:30 a.m. in Ronda. When he approached the house, he was shot at.

Sgt. Russell got in his vehicle and called for back-up. That's when officials say two people drove up to him and said they had been shot. They said there was a man near the house and people were inside.

Back-up arrived and approached the home when they were fired at. Deputies exchanged gunfire and Barrett was fatally shot, officials say. Sgt. Russell was shot through the windshield in his shoulder and grazed on his head. He was flown to Baptist Hospital. As of Monday afternoon he was still in the hospital and was reportedly in good condition.

Officials believe Barrett set a North Ridge Road house on fire during the situation. Neighbors say Barrett has had authorities called on him several times before.

The SBI is assisting in the investigation. The deputy is in the intensive care unit.
