HUNTERSVILLE, NC (WBTV) - Emergency crews say they recovered the body of a teen who reportedly drowned at a popular Huntersville park Tuesday.
The incident happened around 2:00 p.m. on the 5200 block of Sample Road, which is in Latta Plantation, a nature preserve and historic park. The lake is part Mountain Island Lake.
Investigators tell WBTV 17-year-old Marcos Hernandez was swimming with two friends from large rocks in the water, to the shore. That's where they say Hernandez disappeared.
The two teens who were with Hernandez made it to shore.
Through tears, his family said he was a junior at North Mecklenburg High School, where he played rugby.
WBTV talked to Marcos' coach, Bo Pasko, Tuesday evening.
"Marcos had a rare combination of fearlessness and compassion," Pasko said. "He was not only one of the most talented rugby players I've ever coached, but he was also truly loved by his teammates and friends. The family, friends, and fans of North Meck Rugby are devastated."
Rescue crews from multiple departments searched the lake using sonar and a police helicopter for about four hours before confirming that his body had been found.
