Concord Police officer accidentally shoots self during training at gun range

CONCORD, NC (WBTV) - A Concord Police officer was taken to the hospital after accidentally shooting himself during training at a shooting range Wednesday.

The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. at a police shooting range on the 4300 block of Irish Potato Road. Officials said the officer shot himself in the calf while holstering his gun during a training exercise.

The officer was taken to Carolinas Medical Center to be treated for the injury.

Concord Police released a statement about the shooting.

"A Concord Police Officer was injured today while the department was conducting firearms training at the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office Training Center and Firing Range," the statement read. "An officer accidentally discharged his weapon, resulting in a self-inflicted wound in the lower calf. The injury was not life-threatening and the officer remained lucid."

The officer's name has not been released.
