Conover Lumber Company total loss after fire
CATAWBA COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Nearly fifty firefighters from several fire departments were needed to battle a large fire that broke out at a lumber company in Catawba County on Tuesday morning. The building, which the owner says is "part of Conover history," is a total loss.
The fire broke out at the Conover Lumber Company in the 300 block of Conover Boulevard East just before 4:30 a.m.
Officials closed Conover Boulevard East between 4th Avenue SW and 3rd Street SE while crews worked to extinguish the fire.
Fire officials reported seeing heavy fire coming from the structure. Fire investigator with the Conover Fire Department, Chris Hicks, says four to five fire departments assisted with battling the flames.
Fire investigators are working to determine what exactly sparked the flames. Hicks says no one appeared to be at the building when the fire started. "From what we're gathering there was no activity here. They were closed down for the night," Hicks said over the phone.
No one was injured in the fire.
The fire was 90 percent involved and Hicks said by 5:30 a.m., the fire was contained and crews were working to get the hot spots out. The building, which has been there for several years, sustained heavy damage. "A lot of memories here for some people," Hicks said.
