Family: Cousin ejecting gun cartridge when Lenoir teen fatally shot

LENOIR, NC (WBTV) - A 15-year-old who police say was found shot to death in a Lenoir apartment on Friday night has been identified.

Just before 11:30 p.m., Kent Austin Taylor was found with a gunshot wound to his abdomen inside an apartment in the 300 block of NW Atwood Drive. Caldwell County Emergency Medical Services pronounced Taylor dead at the scene.

Family members say Taylor was with his 24-year-old cousin who was ejecting cartridges when the gun, a 9 mm Glock, went off. The family said they tried to save Taylor but couldn't.

According to a search warrant issued for the apartment, a cartridge, cartridge case and six cell phones were seized.

Lenoir police and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations are referring to the case as a "death investigation" and so far, no charges have been filed. Police are still talking with people and expect to send a report to the District Attorney's office in a few days.
