WATAUGA COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - A fatal fire ripped through a convenience store and apartment building Sunday morning in Watauga County, according to fire officials.

The multi-alarm fire happened on 8000 block of Highway 321 at Riverview Grocery and Apartments, according to Watauga dispatch.

When firefighters arrived Sunday morning, they say flames had already done extensive damage to the building.

The Sugar Grove business is a convenience store next to a gas station with apartments above the store. The Watauga County Sheriff's Office says a person was unable to evacuate the building and died in one of the apartments.

Despite assistance from 11 fire departments, the building was destroyed by the blaze.

Four other people were displaced because of the fire, but the American Red Cross was on scene to help them find a place to stay.

Authorities say Highway 321 was completely closed at one point, but has since reopened.

Fire crews have not released the cause of the fire or or the name of the victim.
