ROWAN COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - One person was killed in a camper fire at a mobile home park in Rowan County Monday.

William P. Johnson, 55, was pulled out of a burning camper by a neighbor who attempted to perform CPR with the help of first responders, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

The fire was reported at a camper at the Conestoga Mobile Home park in the 1000 block of Conestoga Trail just before 7 p.m. when, officials say, a neighbor called 911 and said someone was trapped inside.

Rescue crews responded to the scene and pronounced Johnson, also known as "Peppy," dead.

Firefighters reported hearing small explosions as they arrived at the scene, but did not say what they were believed to be.

According to the fire marshal, a pot left cooking on the stove likely caused the fire.
