CHESTER COUNTY, SC (WBTV) - Firefighters are still working to extinguish a fire at the Bennett Landfill in Chester County.

Fire officials are hopeful that the fire they have been battling since Sunday evening, will be completely contained by Thursday morning.

Officials say they got a call Sunday afternoon about gray smoke in the area. The smoke appeared to be coming from behind the Broad River Mart Fuel Station on SC Highway 9 near SC Highway 49, across the river from Lockhart, S.C. Fire officials say they found the landfill on fire around 5 p.m.

The Environmental Protection Agency set up air monitoring equipment for precautionary measures to monitor the air quality. They kept watch on the site for any potential toxic chemicals released into the air. Chester County Emergency Management planned a strategy to extinguish the fire.
