CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Rudy Zekou is dead after his car hit a tree and caught fire Sunday morning. Investigators think speed was a factor in the crash.

At 6:33 a.m. Sunday morning, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say they responded to a single car crash on the 1400 block of Peachtree near Sunset Road. According to CMPD, a Nissan Maxima was on fire when the first officer arrived on scene. The officer tried to put out the fire to save Zekou. There was no one else in the car.

Long Creek Volunteer Fire Department and Medic also responded to the accident. Medic says the Zekou was pronounced dead on scene.

Investigators say the Nissan was driving northeast on Peachtree Road when it ran off the right side of the road and hit a tree head-on. Police don't know if alcohol or any other substance was a factor.
