CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The Charlotte Division of the FBI is offering a reward for information leading to the recovery of two weapons that were stolen from a government vehicle.

The weapons, a Remington 870 shotgun and a Colt M-4LE rifle, along with an olive-colored body armor vest with FBI patches, were taken from an FBI agent's vehicle that was parked in the Hunter Oaks neighborhood off of Rea Road in Union County.

The theft happened on September 29 sometime between midnight and 8 a.m.

FBI Special Agent in Charge John Strong says "there were also other cars burglarized that were not FBI vehicles but we don't know if he {agent} was targeted or not."

Police say the car was locked while it was parked in the Hunter Oaks Subdivision in Waxhaw.

The FBI says the car windows were not broken, and no alarm sounded.

"We're still investigating exactly how they got into the car" Agent Strong says.

According to the FBI, the weapons and the FBI body vest were in the trunk - and each one was in a separate black canvas bag - and the trunk was locked.

Agent Strong says "there are other precautions in place to secure the weapons other than placing them in the locked trunk or putting them in a canvas carry type bag."

Officials say the agent who had the weapons is part of a special response team and is authorized to store weapons in his vehicle.

All local law enforcement agencies, including the Union County Sheriff's Office, are assisting the FBI in the investigation.

The FBI is also offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the weapons' recovery.

Anyone with information about the theft or the weapons' location is asked to call FBI Charlotte at 704-672-6100 or Union County Crimestoppers at 704-283-5600.
