Fatal crash in Belmont leaves pregnant woman dead

BELMONT, NC (WBTV) - An early morning accident has left a pregnant woman dead and another woman with life threatening injuries.

The accident happened when their vehicle went off the road and crashed into the Exit 27 sign while exiting I-85 South. The sign is made of concrete and metal.

The passenger, Heather D. Lochard, 21, of Kernersville N.C. suffered life threatening injuries and later died at Caromont Regional Medical Center.

Lochard was seven months pregnant, the baby also died.

The driver of the vehicle, Brenda G. Parrish, 55, of Bessemer City N.C. suffered serious injuries and was transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Parrish is listed in critical condition at this time.

Two toddlers were in the back seat of the car. The children were taken to Caromont Regional Medical Center.

One of the children suffered a broken wrist. Both children were in car seats at the time of the crash.

At this time officials don't know what caused the accident. The Belmont Police Department is being assisted by the North Carolina Highway Patrol in its investigation.
