GASTON COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Rescue crews have recovered the body of a man they say jumped into Mountain Island Lake and drowned on Thursday.

According to firefighters, a group of people were on a bridge on Highway 16, near the Gaston County and Mecklenburg County state line, videotaping each other jumping into the water.

Around 8:15 p.m., officials said, 21-year-old Johnathan Cureton jumped into the water and never resurfaced. Rescue crews were then called to the scene to search for him.

Friends and family gathered at the scene on Friday morning and stood under a tent waiting for any news about their loved one.

Multiple agencies from Mecklenburg County and Gaston County have their boats on the water. They are using sonar, but because of the water have not put divers in the water yet.

Officials called off the search shortly after 9:30 p.m. Thursday night for lack of light, but were back on the water early Friday morning.

Cureton's body was found around 5 p.m. Friday.
