Report: Man charged after explicit photos of him, young girl found on phone
SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) - A Salisbury man faces a number of charges for sex crimes involving two 15-year-old girls that he says he met on the social media site Facebook.
According to the report from the Rowan Sheriff's Office, David James Garland, 21, of Union Heights Blvd. in Salisbury, is charged with two counts of indecent liberties with children, four counts of statutory rape, two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, and one count of disseminating sexually explicit material to a person under the age of 16.
Investigators say that on Wednesday afternoon, Rowan Sheriff's Deputy Jagger Naves made a traffic stop on a black Nissan that was pulling out of the M & K Mart in Faith. The driver, later identified as Garland, pulled into a driveway in the 100 block of South Main Street.
A 15 year old girl in the passenger seat said she was a friend of Garland's and that Garland was taking her home from school.
Naves noted in his report that the car's tag had been revoked.
When he approached the driver, Naves discovered a marijuana smoking pipe, marijuana, and a scale. Garland gave Naves a one gram bag of pot, according to the report.
Naves also took a cell phone that was on the front seat of the car. On the phone the deputy found what were described as sexually explicit pictures showing Garland and the passenger, as well as at least one other girl.
"The pictures on the phone made it evident that Garland was having inappropriate relationships with the female in his company and at least one additional underage girl," said Captain John Sifford.
Garland met his alleged victims on Facebook, according to the report.
"He was able to develop and cultivate a relationship that turned into other things," Sifford added.
Bond for Garland is set at $75,000.
