Divers called in after NC robbery suspect jumps in river to escape

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Fayetteville police are looking for a robbery suspect who jumped into the Cape Fear River to get away.

Police say the man jumped into the river early Wednesday after a robbery at a convenience store in Hope Mills Tuesday night.

Divers had searched the river for about five hours Wednesday afternoon.

Hope Mills police Chief Joel Acciardo says a man threatened the clerk at the story and demanded money. The man did not show a weapon.

Fayetteville police spotted the truck used in the robbery and chased it to a dead-end road near the river, where the man went down a ladder into the water.

Fayetteville police Chief Harold Medlock says two officers went into the water but were unable to reach the suspect before he went under the water.
