HICKORY, NC (WBTV) - Emergency personnel in Catawba County say a plane with engine failure had to land in an empty corn field near an area highway on Monday.

According to Catawba County Communications, the plane had to land on Whitener Road at Highway 10. This is in the Hickory area.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) say a Cessna 150 aircraft with two people on board landed safely in a corn field, near the highway.

Records obtained by WBTV show the plane, 1973 Cessna A150L Aerobat, is owned by a company called Volare, Inc, located at the Hickory Regional Airport.

The company is a flight training organization which offers a variety of pilot training, including private, commercial and Aerobatic.

An instructor pilot and student were in the plane practicing emergency procedures when the plane's engine failed.

The plane was able to land safely.

According to the company's website, the Cessna 150 Aerobat was introduced in 1970 and became very popular in the Aerobatic training market, and remains a popular sport airplane.

The plane is capable of doing loops, spins & stalls, rolls and other maneuvers.

The student pilot told WBTV he still wants to be a pilot, even after the emergency landing.
