Parts of highway 74 in Monroe was shut down for hours overnight after a horrific collision between a tractor-trailer and a sedan sent both vehicles into a ditch.

The State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash that happened just before midnight Monday.

Officials said the semi truck, carrying tons of produce lost control after the crash, and clipped a power pole before overturning.

Both drivers were pinned in their vehicles until emergency crews could arrive.

The driver of the tractor trailer died on the scene.

The person in the sedan that was evolved in the accident, was rushed to a local hospital.  Firefighters said the driver was in pretty bad shape.

Power workers had to replace the downed pole, which took out electricity to neighborhoods.

Eastbound 74 was reduced to one open lane, westbound was blocked off while Troopers tried to put the pieces of the accident scene together.

Fire crews report there was a dog in the cab of the truck that was pulled out.  Unfortunately, the dog escaped shortly after being rescued, and is at this time unaccounted for.
