Charlotte-Mecklenburg utilities crews say they have fixed a major water main break in Charlotte and are working on repairing and reopening the road.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utility Department, a 16-inch water main broke on Remount Road, just west of the South Boulevard intersection, on Thursday.

That pipe was repaired by 10:30 a.m. Friday morning.  Crews say they are working to repair the road, which is expected to last throughout the day on Friday.

The road is expected to remain closed through the Friday evening commute.

Crews were called to the scene Thursday night after several drivers spotted water gushing up from the road.

Around 9 p.m. crews turned the water off, and began pulling up sections of the road.

CMUD officials say the only water outage was to the building that houses Penn Station East Coast Subs and the Canine Café.

Both businesses have since had water restored.
