An intruder was shot and killed during a burglary in Marshville, just southeast of Monroe, according to the Union County Sheriff's Office.

Union County Sheriff's Deputies were called to a report of a burglary in progress at a home off Lanesboro Road around 1 a.m. Thursday.

The homeowners told the 911 dispatcher that someone had forced their way into the home wearing a mask and using a handgun.

The people inside the home were able to get a loaded weapon and shoot the intruder.

Robby Charles Blount, 25, of Monroe, died from his wounds in the front yard of the home, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Deputies set up a command post in front of the home, which was tucked back in the woods off the main roadway.

The home was well lit, and it's not known right now why it may have been targeted.

Investigators on scene are keeping many of the details close to the vest as the case continues forward, but say they will release more information later in the day.
