CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Letter carriers with the United States Post Office here in Charlotte and all over the country on Sunday are taking part in a national day of action.

The rallies are an attempt to bring attention to the mass layoffs that will happen if Saturday mail delivery is dropped.

If the six-day mail delivery is done away with it is reported that it will put 35,000 people out of work.

Workers are calling on Congress to intervene to reverse the decision made by the Postmaster General.

They say that ending Saturday delivery does not fix the root cause of the deficit problems faced by the USPS.

The rally at the Carmel Road Post office is slated to begin at 2pm on Sunday and will feature speakers from different Charlotte branches as well as state AFL-CIO president James Andrews.
