One inmate dead, another injured in prison incident
ANSON COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - One inmate is dead and another injured after an incident at a state prison in Anson County.
The incident was reported around 1:30 p.m. at the Lanesboro Correctional Institution in Polkton.
The Anson County Sheriff's Office says one inmate is dead and another was stabbed.
A spokesman for the N.C. Department of Corrections says two inmates were taken to the hospital.
Wesley Turner was stabbed to death and taken to Anson Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the N.C. Department of Public Safety.
Turner, according to the NCDPS, was serving time in the prison for the charges of second degree murder, conspiracy murder first degree, and an attempted prison escape. He was scheduled to stay in jail until 2017.
The other inmate who was injured is being treated for his injuries. His name has not been released.
The state says the prison was on lockdown while they investigated the incident.
Lanesboro Correctional Institution is a 1,000 cell, high security prison facility located adjacent to Brown Creek Correctional Institution and Anson Correctional Center in Polkton, NC. The prison is named for the nearby community of Lanesboro.
The prison has a staff complement of 403 employees including correctional officers, administrators, food service, medical, dental and maintenance workers.
Lanesboro has a standard operating capacity of 864 close-custody male inmates, with 128 segregation cells and 8 health care beds. The first inmates arrived in January 2004.
