Witnesses: Man thrown "bridge high" after explosion on Lake Wylie

LAKE WYLIE, SC (WBTV) - A man is in the hospital after investigators say his watercraft exploded on Lake Wylie Friday afternoon.

According to the York County Sheriff's Office, investigators were called to the lake around 12:41 p.m. Friday afternoon to the report of an explosion.

Investigators say a 31-year-old man from Waxhaw, North Carolina was riding his Sea Doo watercraft at the lake when it stalled near the Buster Boyd Bridge.

Witnesses told investigators that when he tried to crank the watercraft again, it exploded.  Those witnesses told investigators that the man was thrown "bridge high" during the explosion.

The man was rushed to Piedmont Medical Center and was last seen talking to emergency crews, complaining of pain in his arms and legs.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is investigating the accident.  DNR officials are using SONAR equipment to search for the bottom of the watercraft, which sank after the explosion.

The York County Sheriff's Office is assisting in the investigation.
