Deadly wreck shuts down major south Charlotte thoroughfare

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Police in Charlotte are investigating a deadly crash that forced a major thoroughfare on the city's south side to shut down Friday morning.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, officers were called to the intersection of Johnston Road and Providence Road West before 6:30 a.m. Friday morning.

Officers told WBTV that there were two vehicles that had crashed at this intersection, leaving at least one person pinned in their vehicle.

Police say 20-year-old Tyler George Lowe ran a red light and smashed into the driver side door of another car.

Alan Shuart, 68, was pronounced dead by medics on the scene, according to CMPD.

One other person was transported by emergency crews to Carolinas Medical Center-Main with critical injuries.
