CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - One of Charlotte's best-known neighborhoods is about to get a major facelift.

The city will break ground on a million-dollar makeover for Plaza Midwood next month.

Just minutes from Center City, the area is bracing for another phase of public reconstruction, and business owners along Central Avenue are saying bring it on.

Ken Demert has been repairing time pieces in this neighborhood for more than three decades at Hall's Clock Shop.

" I've been in this neighborhood through the good and the bad, and I really like it now. It's real good," he said.

Real good may soon get better.

The City of Charlotte is weeks away from starting work on the Plaza Central Pedscape Plan. It will bring a new sidewalks, and improved lighting.

Karina Arlington operates the Sadu body modification studio on Central and says calls the neighborhood an eclectic magnet.

She said, "We have all kinds of people, all different interests, music, antiques, body piercing, tattooing."

If there part of the plan where change will come, it is Commonwealth Avenue.

In recent months, the Diamond Restaurant changed its owners and looks have is now growing a new customer base, and in the next block operators of the Common Market call change bitter sweet.

Workers there like Tom Stanfel worry about losing storefront parking.

"These are the only dedicated spots for the common market anywhere", he said. The back lot where sharing with four or five businesses and I think the streetscape is goanna eliminate this part of the side walk and give diagonal parking which will be open to everybody."

The price tag for that neighborhood development project is more than a million dollars.
