CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A dedicated father honored his daughter in a big way Monday morning.

David Hodgkins and his wife Donna helped found the Charlotte-based Purple Promise Foundation to End Melanoma in honor of their daughter, Jessica.  She died of melanoma in 2008.  She was young.  Only 30 years old.

On Monday the couple made their first grant on behalf of Purple Promise to fund melanoma research.  They handed over a $25,000 check to the Levine Cancer Center at Carolinas Medical Center, which is working on a drug to help victims of late-state melanoma.

Purple Promise is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 which raises money for education and research about skin cancer.
