UNION COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - A motorcyclist who tried to outrun law enforcement officers in Union County was involved in a head-on collision Thursday afternoon and later died from his injuries.

The accident occurred at 3:26 p.m. in the 6800 block of Newtown Road.

Aaron Avery Watson, 25 was driving the motorcycle.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Watson was traveling westbound on Newtown Road in excess of 100 miles-per-hour.

Trooper Mark Helms said Watson crossed the center line and ran head-on into a van traveling west.

Prior to the crash, a sheriff's deputy spotted Watson and flashed his blue lights in an attempt to stop the motorcycle.

The highway patrol says Watson weaved around cars to get away from the deputy.

After crashing into the van, Watson was ejected from the motorcycle and his leg was amputated.

Watson was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte and was pronounced dead Thursday night.

The driver and passenger in the van suffered serious injuries. Both were transported to Carolinas Medical Center-Union.
