SUNSET BEACH, NC (WECT) – The new Sunset Beach Bridge has only been open for about 24 hours and has already seen its first car accident.
Most residents in the area are excited about the new bridge, but they would like to see the DOT install a stop light to prevent more accidents from happing.
According to police, around 11:30 Friday morning, a man in a Chevy Impala was headed toward the island on Sunset Boulevard while a truck was coming from the opposite direction, ready to turn left onto the new bridge. The two vehicles collided, but everyone is okay.
Several police officers agree with the residents, saying a stop light is necessary.
They also said they like the new bridge because they can get to emergencies faster, because they don't have to stop for boats to pass.
