Man killed by tree toppled by wind

DENTON, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina man was killed when high winds brought down a tree on top of his pickup truck.

The state Highway Patrol said Wednesday that 44-year-old Johnnie Jernigan of Denton was killed around 4:15 p.m. when the tree fell on his truck as he drove on N.C. 109.

State Trooper Perry Buie said heavy rains early Wednesday morning saturated the ground, and the high winds helped bring the tree down.

Gusty winds whipped through North Carolina Wednesday, with one reported gust reaching 47 mph in the central part of the state.

The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory and a high wind warning for parts of North Carolina through Thursday morning.
